Findings of an etailing group analysis shows that almost half of the ecommerce executives surveyed anticipate a change of platform in two years.

eTailing Group in conjunction with Venda conducted a survey of 160 ecommerce executives, throughout the second quarter of 2005, to understand how merchants select and use technology solutions.

The survey questions tried to find out what the ecommerce merchants think about the technology support they have and whether they would like a change. The report includes information related to levels of satisfaction and the lessons learned.

Lauren Freedman, president of the etailing group, says “To remain competitive multi-channel merchants must deliver best-in-class merchandising and exemplary customer experiences at a cost that keeps the bottom line intact.”

According to the findings of the survey, 48% of those surveyed anticipate a change of technology platform within two years.

According to the respondents, the following are the factors that are significant for deciding the technology in rank order: Features/Functionality, cost, reliability/stability, merchant control and platform flexibility.

The least significant factors were: Fulfillment capability, time to market and hosting capabilities.

Based on the survey the etailing group offers a checklist for merchants to keep in mind.

The etailing group’s Technology Selection Checklist urges the ecommerce marketers to be comprehensive in assessing their needs, clear in defining their requirements, collaborative with internal teams and external partners, cognizant of costs, competitive, conscientious, consumer responsive, a good communicator, in control and a comparison shopper.
