How to Stay on Topic and Create Profitable Info Products

Great information marketers know their topics and can hammer out great content and products through an almost innate instinct. Sure, there is research to be done and a lot of work involved, but I still believe that some successful people have what it takes naturally.

Of course, not everyone is born with “success instincts,” so it never hurts to keep a good checklist close by of some important items that you should be on top of when creating your info products. Depending on what your info topic is, this list can vary. But here are five simple items you should be on the ball with when creating your info marketing products:

— 100% proofread content: Writing is fun. Ask any copy, screen, or short story writer. You are holed up in your office or even a cafe pounding out your words the way you like them.
What isn’t fun is editing. I’ve been busted a few times for typos and grammar mistakes both in school and when doing some early contracts. It was embarrassing, but worth learning from.
The lesson is simple — your stuff should be sparkling clean and free from any language mistakes. You get good at this by doing it a lot. When in doubt though, show your copy to someone else to read it. It is a must in this business and, if you need help, be sure to get it.

— Clear graphics and pictures: Having worked in publishing and been interested in film and photography throughout my life, I have seen how graphics are manipulated in modern
media. Since digital imaging came into being, it’s become a very easy process to put graphics in publications. Anyone can do it and there are tons of options to make your graphics looks great. With that in mind, many people do half-hearted jobs in putting their graphics within their info content. Pixilated photos and overblown, sensational colorings are common. Avoid this.
If you have trouble getting good graphics into your content, take it to a publisher or designer who can help you. Your graphics are the icing on your info content cake, so make sure they have the right look and appeal.

— A set layout: With the above, I suggest settling on a layout for your info products. A good layout should surround all of the content of your info products. This might be a letterhead,
footer, logo or any combination of the three. When people get a newsletter or e-book or info book from you, one glance at and they will know it is yours. It’s a good signature to have.

— Regular updates: Web sites and blogs are part-and-parcel of almost all businesses these days. They are created often as quickly as the business is declared. The provide people online
with tips and info about the business itself. But professionals often forget about them, letting them dwindle in cyberspace. Don’t let this happen to you. Keep your web site(s) regularly
updated with even the most basic information or news. People will know that you are still on the ball with your business, and that you are proudly keeping them current on any developments.

— Current info: This is the capper. No matter what it takes — news collection, field research, a few phone calls — you should always be on the lookout for new information at all times.
Again, it doesn’t have to be mammoth. It just has to be current. Whatever new, quick tips or large bodies of information come out, be sure to get them to your clients ASAP. Whether in
newsletter or book form, it doesn’t matter. Just stay current and get the goods out within the body of your products, as this will keep your clients interested on a regular basis.

There are all kinds of things you can do to keep your info marketing business fresh and exciting. But don’t forget about the basics. The regular quality and care you put in will keep it at its best and your clients coming back time and again.
