Big Promoting on a Small Budget

When you think about advertising and promoting your business, people say you have to think “big.”

“Big” can mean a lot of things: big billboards, magazine ads, and promotional schemes. You want to get as much success as you can and the idea of getting some big promotional achine
going to do that seems like the only way you can achieve this success.

If you can do this, great. In fact, go for it. Provided you have the coin on hand or some worthwhile investor backing you up, you really should go big. Your chances to achieve bigger
success will be higher. But, let’s face it; who has the money for this?

And if you don’t, that’s alright.

A lot of time information marketers overlook the subtle methods of promotion. If you want to get people to check you out and maybe even become a new cash-paying customer, there are some very basic, easy and inexpensive ways of doing this. Here are the most overlooked and, to my mind, the most effective:

— Always have a business card: Wherever you go, whenever you go out, having four or five business cards in your wallet or briefcase will always be an effective way to promote your business. You might wind up in a pub or cafe with a business card pot or corkboard where local professionals check out other businesses. You might be at a convention and be shooting the
breeze with an entrepreneur like you, and you know you should keep in touch. Or you might be on the bus or an airplane and meet some random person who wants to know more about you.
Business cards are cheap to produce, easy to hand out, and something people can carry around as reference for both you and your services. Make sure you always have them.

— Get listed in print and online: Business listings are everywhere. From the old school “Yellow Pages”-style publications to a “Craigslist,” there are always places that you can advertise your business, often for free. A lot of people disregard these listings, thinking nobody will read them. But people do read them. If industry pros and other entrepreneurs need a special service, these listings are often the first things they scope out. I can personally say I’ve landed more than one
writing gig thanks to them. With that in mind, don’t pass go, and get listed! You’ll be giving yourself the exposure you need.

— Promote using your products: Obviously, your info products have information in them, and a lot at that. But don’t be afraid to try an internal promotion scheme. You should have an ad or
two on your web site, plus a link back to your home page in your online material, and even some links within your regular newsletters. In your print products, make sure your contact
information and maybe a tagline like “If you require more information or info related services, please contact me” are included. It sounds like something so simple and automatic, but
you’d be surprised on how much potential business can be lost if an entrepreneur neglects to use their products as a vehicle for self-promotion. These are your products and they can serve you in more ways than one.

— Word-of-mouth: Again, this one is overlooked. It’s human nature for people not to want to talk about what they do when they are around others or advise people they work with to help
keep them in a “low profile.” But if want to get some serious promotion going for your info marketing business, you should be discussing it with friends, family, and associates. You should also encourage satisfied clients and associates to spread the word about what you do. People can read ads and business cards, but often they only trust what certain folks tell them. It’s up to you to be part of the trusted spoken network.

Success takes hard work. There’s no question about it. But sometimes the simplest things can go a long way towards bettering your success. When heading down that crazy road of
promotion, start with the materials you have or have access to. They can always help you achieve that information marketing success you crave.
