Weekend Success Bulletin
I’m the kind of person who likes to get everything out of the way first thing in the morning.
Some people like to schedule their whole day. They’ll write this report at 9 a.m., have this meeting at 10:30, go and run some errands at 2 p.m., etc.
Not me. I want to get everything done right away. I love the feeling of knocking off a checklist. And the reason I like to do things right away is because I know that, as soon as I knock two things off the top of the list, two more things are going to be added to the bottom.
I try to get into the office around 7:30 a.m. Sometimes I get in here at 6:30, sometimes at 8:00. It all depends on whether my daughter wakes up before I leave the house (if she does, I’m the
one who makes her breakfast, while my wife shakes out her morning cobwebs).
As soon as I get into the office, I get down to business. I want to get my plate cleared so that if there are any unexpected surprises, I’ll have plenty of time to handle them.
I look at it as preparing for my day. Now, in an ideal world, I’d be done everything I have to do by noon and I could go out golfing or go home and spend the time with my family.
But, more often than not, another opportunity presents itself and I’m ready to pounce on it.
If you find that your days are too full and you can’t seem to get anything done, try these tips to help you accomplish more and stress less:
— Make a checklist of what you have to do for the day. Even better, make it the night before. The checklist is key because you’ll be able to visualize whatever you need to do.
— Try waking up earlier. Between 7:30 and 9:00 a.m. just might be the most productive part of my day. When I get in at 6:30, it’s even better, because I get more done. If you’re not an
early riser, try to change that habit by waking up earlier in 15-minute increments every week. Now, try to get your list done in half the time. Don’t compromise on quality; just try to work
at a quicker pace. This way, when something else comes up, you’ll have the time to do it. With this tip, you’ll be more successful and have more productive time.
— Eliminate distractions. I’ll admit it. I’ve been prone to giving in to distractions. This is the reason I work out of an office instead of my home. I like the separation and there are less
distractions here than at my house. We don’t all have that option, so to eliminate distractions when working from home, find a secluded space (office, basement, heck…even your
bathroom!) and work there. Turn off your phone, disable your e-mail, even wear earplugs if you have to. Just keep 100% of your focus on what needs to be done. Just remember; when
you’ve got a full day ahead of you, you won’t have any time to fit in something that may mean the difference between success and failure.
