How To Atract Crowds By Creating A Noise — Lessons In The Art of Busking
Every week I read about weird and interesting things from other fields and see how they might apply to Internet marketing.
This is how you stimulate the creative process.
This week I discovered a fascinating art called “Busking.”
You’ve seen jugglers, magicians, Tarot readers and many others in public places doing their act and getting donations to the hat.
That’s the art of busking.
It’s really quite fascinating. If you’ve been reading my ezine, you know I was a MAGICIAN when I was younger, doing magic parties for kids birthday parties when I was in the 7th grade.
My grandmother travelled with a magician and was in his shows as the star performer.
First of all, an opportunity-minded marketer decided to create a little info product business based on this niche:

That’s the email capture page if you wanna get a freebie on busking.
Here’s one of the most famous street magicians, Cellini, who created a DVD line on the topic:

If it isn’t obvious, I’m showing you how someone took a niche topic and created a stream of income from it.
Here’s a clip from DVD 2:

Now, to the matter at hand. I don’t remember where but I found a clip from the Cellini DVD’s where he talked about how street performers attract a crowd.
And the secret is…..
NOISE.
The FIRST thing a street performer (busker) has to do is attract and build a crowd.
The video explained how performers do this by yelling out things or banging something or playing music or making loud noises.
I really was fascinated with the wide variety of methods used.
And about now you’re saying, “OK Marlon, I don’t perform on the street. So what does this have to do with me?”
That question right there is how you come up with GREAT marketing ideas. You ask yourself that and see if you can come up with answers.
MY answer is this:
To attract a crowd, you have to create a noise. That applies online just as much as it does on the streets.
How can you create a noise? Let’s brainstorm a few ways:
1. You develop a killer value proposition and SCREAM it in big print on your web page.
Example:
http://www.promotemarlon.com/roundtable
That page creates a bit of a noise.
2. You get a number of affiliates all talking about something.
3. You give way something of exceptional value so you get buzz going and people talking about it.
4. You do webinars for people where you make a big noise about whatever it is.
5. You stimulate conversation on a forum with a controversial thread.
6. You take a controversial standpoint on something.
7. You rally support around a cause.
8. You produce an attention-getting audio or video that breaks the PATTERN of what has come before it.
9. You speak at seminars with a unique angle or flair and create visibility
10. You get creative and do something I haven’t even thought of.
You’ll notice that big product launches that are successful usually have a video or audio component that creates a noise.
Usually, it’s a production angle that hasn’t been done before by other marketers.
Or maybe it’s a freebie of exceptional value that creates a noise.
If you’ve followed me the past few years, you probably remember a few NOISY promotions I did like:
* Pimp My Website
* Kiss The Elephant’s Rear End guarantee
* Pizza podcast
…and you can probably think of quite a few others.

How Can YOU Create A Noise?
===========================
How can you create a noise for what you’re doing? Maybe you’re starting out so it’s a small noise.
That’s OK.
You have to start somewhere.
Now, after you create a noise the second thing a street performer does is draws the crowd in closer.
Maybe you get people to post on your blog. Or you hold a webinar or workshop.
Or you hold a Facebook group meeting or do a Tweet In.
The possibilities are endless.
Then you get into your performance. This is where you provide value of some sort. This is where the street performer entertains.
But the thing I wanted to focus on here is creating a noise.
Think about things you’ve bought recently or in the past year.
What kind of noise was created that got your attention?
What happened that drew you in?
What kind of entertainment or value was provided.
How can YOU apply those ideas to what it is you have to promote or sell?
How could you get others creating a noise for you?
How you could create a noise on a forum?
How could you create a noise with your affiliate program?
How could you create any noise at all that would attract a crowd?
I’m assuming you do this with a bit of intelligence. You obviously don’t want to attract too much negative attention. You don’t want the noise you create to distract from your message.
The idea is simply to attract a crowd.
Some street performers play music.
Some simply yell out that a show starts at X time.
Some bang a drum or other tool loudly.
They do SOMETHING that gets attentioin and attracts a crowd.
We live in a NOISY marketplace.
You have to create enough NOISE that you stand out above the rest of the noise!
This is my idea for you today.
Step one: Create a noise
Step two: Attract a crowd
Step three: Pull the crowd closer
Step four: Entertain or provide value
Step five: Close
Here’s another interesting blog by a well-known busker:
http://jimmytalksalot.blogspot.com/
Go out there and make some noise.
Don’t be shy.
Otherwise, you’ll have no crowd.
