Taking the Self-Employment Plunge

Recently, I was invited to sit down with a colleague and discuss his plans to flip his life around and start his own small business.

We went over his business plan, looked at his budget and reviewed the testing he plans to do with his advertising.

It appears as though he has everything in order. There’s only one thing holding him back.

He has a pretty decent full-time job that pays him well and provides him with a few benefits he really enjoys. However, he’s grown sick of his position in the company and really wants to get away from the bureaucracy of a major corporation.

So, to make the jump from a pretty cushy, although completely mind-numbing job to a much less secure, self-employed lifestyle has my colleague a little scared.

It’s easy to understand his hesitation. It takes guts to go out on your own and many people believe that they may not cut it out there in uncharted waters.

It’s this fear alone that keeps many people from at least attempting to live their dreams. How, then, can you overcome your fear to make that jump and change your life?

Well, you can start by testing the waters. My colleague spent a few months, in his spare time, shadowing a few people he had met in the same business he plans to start. He got to learn a few ins-and-outs of the business, heard their stories of struggle and success and, in the end, got a much better picture of where his life could take him.

The second step is to take a few steps to give make for error. If your business plan relies entirely on everything working out exactly as planned, well, when something goes wrong, no matter how big or small it is, you’re going to be up to your neck in troubles.

So, before you make that jump, get out there, take a good look at what you want to do next and get prepared to take that big dive.
