Most of the people in your audience want you to succeed. If you are overly nervous and anxious, they will become nervous and anxious for you. It has been estimated that 50 percent of the audience will like you, no matter what you do; 25 percent will find something to not like about you, no matter how effectively you present; and 25 percent are “up for grabs.”

To make even more of the audience members become allies, get to the presentation early and greet them as they come into the room. Or, if there is a chance to network before the presentation, take this opportunity to make some friends.

Theme: RESOLUTIONS

This section’s theme is RESOLUTIONS. An obvious theme for the beginning of the year, right? I know that RESOLUTIONS get lots of bad rap and jokes about how we make them and break them – also how we make the same ones again year after year. True.

I call my RESOLUTIONS goals and make them as goals (which I do usually achieve even before the end of the year). What is the difference? When you make your RESOLUTIONS /
goals, be specific. In other words, don’t write (and writing them down is an important step – be sure to do this), “I am going to lose weight this year.” Instead, write, “I am going to lose 50 pounds this year, one pound a week.”

RESOLUTIONS/goals that work are measurable, timely and achievable. If you write, “I am going to lose 50 pounds in three months.” I would say that this is not achievable or healthy.

I guess it could be done, but it is much too fast (and not a lasting RESOLUTION/goal).

“I shall stick to my RESOLUTION of writing always what I think no matter whom it offends.” – Julia Ward Howe
