‘My Favorite Way to Market During Tough Times’
If you’re a bit concerned about how to stay in touch with your community during these tough economic times I have a solution for you. The answer is NOT to pull back. In fact, the people who actually make the extra effort NOW will stand out head and shoulders above everyone else because the impulse for many is to pull back.
Here’s whatcha do . . . take a page from the past.
Direct mail used to be the main method of reaching an audience. With the Internet and free email, direct mail was scoffed at in the early 2000s. Just a few years later with deliverability issues and email overload, direct mail has come back in vogue.
Direct mail works because:
* It stays around longer than email
* It’s portable
* It’s less strain on the eyes
* Fewer marketers are doing it
While direct mail can be pricey it doesn’t have to be . . . if you know what you’re doing. Here are a few shoestring budget options that really build rapport and trust.
1. Write a monthly newsletter. I send one out every month to my Sterling members called “Hot Off the Presses.” We get great feedback from it. While many people love our ezine, sometimes they are just too busy and don’t get around to reading it right away. (Sound familiar?) But when they get a printed newsletter from Red Hot Copy, they can carry it around with them and read it at their leisure. Face it, we spend more time AWAY from the computer than ON it! If you want to get in on the action visit www.redhotcopy.com/sterling.htm. You also get a monthly call with me and a community forum of like-minded folks.
2. Send free gifts. Sure this costs more in the front end but if you can budget to send out a CD or DVD with no strings attached, they have a very high perceived value. Of course the requisite Starbucks gift cards never go out of style.
3. Send cards and postcards. By far my favorite way to keep in touch is using greeting cards because when used right, they’re always a pleasant surprise. I’ve explored lots of different options and settled on www.MyRedHotCards.com because of their:
* Huge selection of thousands of cards
* Flexibility to send postcards or cards in envelops
* Ability to upload your personal handwriting
* Option to add your own picture or logo
* Do-it-all-for-you set up
* Option to include and mail gifts
So even though some may see today’s economy as a reason to stick their heads in the sand, those of us who’ll stay on-top-of-mind and continue to be an inspiration are the ones who’ll embrace direct mail and stand out!
