(1) Tips from Two Often Requested Special Reports and Topics
=================================================
On my information website, http://www.creativekeys.net, include a site SEARCH box. This lets me know weekly
exactly what you, my visitor, is looking for on this website.
Two of the keywords often searched are storytelling and handouts. Therefore, I have written a Special Report on each and am including a tip from each.
Everyone loves and listens to a good story! In this Special Report we will explore the power of using story and storytelling in presentations and also in our businesses. When we use this powerful tool, employees, clients and potential clients will listen. In the words of Annette
Simmons, “We will rediscover the oldest tool of influence in human history – telling a good story. Storytelling is not limited to fairy tales or traditional folktales. Telling a good story is like giving a mini-documentary of what you have seen so others can see it, too.”
Personal stories can be true-life stories about you or someone in your family. Humor and/or drama help a great deal, so it is OK to embellish – but, not out and out prevaricate. I am part of a storytelling list where we recently had a lively discussion about tellers making up first person stories or telling someone else’s story as if it were theirs. The sad part is that if the listeners learn that it wasn’t true at all for you, they will lose trust in you. So, my advice is if you are going to be autobiographical, make sure that it actually happened to you.
This Special Report will answer all of your questions about using Handouts – the good, the bad and the ugly! Recently, one of the discussion lists of which I am a member held a lively discussion about giving and receiving handouts when presenting a workshop. In this report I distill some of their ideas – both pros and cons – along with including my opinions and practices culled from many years of leading or attending workshops, seminars, keynotes and/or presentations of all kinds.
Avoid running out of having enough handouts for everyone. I know it is wasteful to have too many handouts left over, but those who don’t receive them are disappointed and wonder why
you are not prepared properly. If you do use the same handouts for different groups, you can set up the masters, so that you only need a few changes on the cover and first pages. (Note: if you do run out, have those who don’t receive a handout, give you their address, and do mail them a copy the minute you get back to your office).
You will find out all about these Special Reports and many more at http://www.creativekeys.net/SpecialReports.htm

Theme: RECOGNITION
In 1959, Frederick Herzberg developed a list of factors which are closely based on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, except it more closely related to work. Under “Motivators or satisfiers” he listed RECOGNITION right at the top. started thinking about how important RECOGNITION is – both the giving and receiving of it.
Oftentimes, we are not RECOGNIZED for doing a good job, but are for making a mistake – and that is not very rewarding. I am sure that you feel as I do – I love having someone compliment me on an accomplishment. I am also delighted when out of the blue, someone from the past recognizes me and, even better, remembers my name.
Now, let’s talk about giving RECOGNITION. Notice how others’ faces light up when you compliment them on a well done project. Or, remember their name. In my fitness classes,
students share their victories – weight loss, lower blood pressure, being the star hiker on an outing. Besides congratulating them, I always ask if I can share what they’ve told me with the rest of the class. The RECOGNITION brings applause from everyone, and talk about a
motivator!
We must not only give sincere RECOGNITION to others, but also RECOGNIZE our own victories and accomplishments. Give yourself a pat on the back for all of your good work and
deeds.
“There are two things people want more than sex and money… RECOGNITION and praise.” – Mary Kay Ash, American business woman.
