How to Use the Law of Attraction to Better Your Career, Clients and Bottom Line

I’m assuming by now that you have at last heard something about ‘The Law of Attraction’ (LOA) – popularized by the grassroots success of the movie and book called “The Secret” and by the authors and speakers who are in it (and many others). If you haven’t, you will . . . that is basically the secret – what you focus on is what you get (like attracts like).

While some of the hype around LOA is overblown and a bit Hollywood (sorry Lorrie, no disrespect to L.A. and all- you know I love you!) there is still much to harvest from this powerful methodology particularly for copywriters and internet marketers who know a thing or two about the emotive and persuasive effects of thoughts and painting a positive feeling future.

What Is LOA:

Law of Attraction (LOA) is a powerful force that works like a gravitation pull. We create things in our lives (and in the lives of our clients) based on where our focus is primarily directed and . . . here is the very important part . . . by the emotions or FEELINGS that that focus elicits within us (or in the case of copy, within the reader).

We are each like little radio stations, beaming out a signal to the world. Our signal (or tone, if you will), is at a certain frequency. It’s unique to us and the things that we focus on and how those things make us feel. It’s a matching kind of signal. It locks onto things that match our tone and brings them back to us. That is where the gravitation comes in, or the word ‘attraction’ that is used in its name. Like attracts like. You will attract to you the things that match your tone – overall and on certain subjects or focus areas.

Use LOA on Yourself:

One of the best ways to use LOA to enhance your career, your clients and your bottom line, is to use it on yourself. Its happening by default anyway, so might as well learn a bit about this force, so you can be more deliberate with it. How can you use LOA to mold and shape your life? By spending good quality time focused on what you really want, as opposed to obsessing on what you don’t.

As human creatures, we unfortunately have not been trained to make the most of our natural gifts: the power of our focus, our imagination and our emotions. In fact, our society trains us to misuse these gifts by focusing on what we don’t want, instead of what we really do. It teaches us to worry, fret and complain about things which results in negative emotions. Which in turn, results in negative attraction. A grave misuse of our precious gifts.

Instead you want to train yourself (and your clients) to focus on what you and they DO want. As a copywriter and/or internet marketer, etc . . . when you think of yourself and your future, you want to train yourself to be a ‘selective sifter’ and a ‘positive scriptwriter’. When you consider your business and your career, use your mind to find things that feel good to you. Hunt around for some positive stuff. Learn to soften your internal messages, so what you are telling yourself feels good, instead of negative, pessimistic or glum.

Write Positive Scripts:

Here’s a fun (and sneakily effective) exercise for us writer types. To boost the effectiveness of your career and its future, get in the habit of writing positive scripts. Grab a sheet of paper, or open a file on your computer. And begin to write a script for the character who is you. Write it in the third person. Then begin to write how you want your career and life to turn out.

For example, here is one for Jane Smith (mid 30s, recently divorced, currently doing ‘ok’ copywriter, who wants to do better): Remember she is writing this about herself, from the 3rd person point of view:

“Jane was struggling with her business last year. She made the leap into self employment and left her dreaded day job. It was really tough for a while as she was scared and insecure and worried about how to pay the bills without a J.O.B. There were some really rough days and some even harder nights – the kind where she woke in the wee hours of the morning with panic in her gut – yuck. However, her life and work did turn itself around, after that early transitional phase.

Instead of waking up early and nervous, she began waking up from really nice dreams, filled with great situations, people, places and things that felt good, fun, happy, prosperous and exciting.

When she checked her email, she began to find notes from cool colleagues, good prospective clients and other kinds of leads and alliances. People were mysteriously being drawn to her. The more she relaxed and trusted and focused on doing the immediate things in front of her the better things went. Cool things occurred without her really having to try or make them happen, they just did, easily and naturally. It started to get really fun.

She looked around her and discovered she had work and plenty of it – it had just snuck up on her. And she was beginning to make really good money, it was stacking up in fact, accumulating a nice little balance in her account. Which made her feel good every time she looked or thought about it.

She also sensed good things brewing for her future, as if something was just off on the horizon gathering bulk and texture – something that felt really, really good.

Funny thing was, the better it got the better it got, on all fronts. Her personal life took a surprising turn for the better too. Guys started approaching her and asking her out, men she was really interested in and liked. They were . . .”

Wow, I could have kept spinning the yarn there for sweet Jane. See how the energy shifted and built upwards?! And how it easy it would have been to keep on going on that happy, upward spiral? That is what you want to habitually be doing when you consider your own future. Focus on what you DO want. Which gets you into a great vibe. Which transmits that energy out into the universe. Which brings its match back to you. When you do writing and imagination work like this your vibe is doing its like attracts like thing. Much better than the regular habit of focusing on what has been or what is (unless you’ve got everything just as you’d like it).

Yes, this particular example might not apply to you (you could be a happily married, 50s, male tech entrepreneur or some such), but the process is the same regardless of your particulars. There is always room for more positive, selective focus – just write it the way your life was/is and FLIP IT to how YOU want it to be. Keep it general, or go as specific as you can and still feel good. If something doesn’t feel good, delete it and write again. Keep drafting. You are making it up as you go. Just like your life is being created via the thoughts and feelings that you regularly think. Let it rip!

Problem-Solution:

This exercise is just one of the many ways you can use LOA to effectively improve your career, your clients and your bottom line. To get the Law of Attraction working for you instead of against you, you must interrupt the negative patterns you (and your clients and their clients) have going on, and focus instead on the good feeling alternatives.

It’s the ol’ problem-solution copywriting trick (that is why its an ol’ trick – it works with LOA in a positive way). Focus on the problem just long enough to feel the negative feelings of what you don’t want and then use that contrast to FLIP IT over to what you really do want instead. Whether your focus is your own future, or your focus is copy for a client’s product or service. It’s the same dynamic. Poke around the negative for a bit, but get off it soon and onto the positive, better feeling alternative. And really pump that positive feeling alternative up by tapping into all of the human senses (sight, feel, taste, smell, sound). Milk those good feeling emotions.

Make focusing on the positive outcome a habit and you’ll be floating down easy street in your life and in your business with LOA as your friend (not your worst enemy).

p.s. The Secret is a good starting place, but if you like the LOA concepts in this article, I suggest you check out the secret behind the secret, Abraham-Hicks, the LOA teachers I learned the scripting process and others from. They are fantastic.
