In 2006, North American Search Engine Marketing spending increased by 62%. North American advertisers spent $9.4 billion on search engine marketing, according to a report, “The State of Search Engine Marketing 2006” by SEMPO.
In 2006, North American Search Engine Marketing spending increased by 62%. North American advertisers spent $9.4 billion on search engine marketing, according to a report, “The State of Search Engine Marketing 2006” by SEMPO.
SEMPO surveyed 587 agency and in-house advertisers to prepare the report.

SEMPO has provided the following data in its report:
– 75% of advertisers said they could afford a mild increase in paid placement
– Organic SEO accounted for $1.1 billion in spending (12% of total spending)
– Paid inclusion accounted for $94 million (1% of total spending)
– SEM technology platforms accounted for $122 million in spending (1.3% of total spending)
– 96% respondents used Google AdWords
– 86% respondents used Yahoo! programs
– In 2005 29% of respondents were using MSN; In 2006 the number reached 68%.
