Secure Computing has warned of a VOIP-based phishing scam. The scam uses VOIP numbers as fake credit card and financial services phone numbers.

The scam is named ‘vishing’ since it is a telephone based phishing scam.

In the scam, customers receive a telephone call with an automated voice. The voice informs them that their credit card is subject to some fraudulent activity and that the customer should call a specified number for further information.

Once the customer calls the number specified on the call, they hear an automated voice asking for their Credit Card number and other personal information.

The scam allows phishers to gain access to personal information including:

– ID information

– Expiration date

– ID details

– Credit Card numbers

– Account numbers

Secure Computing has offered tips to avoid such vishing scams. The tips include:

– Credit Card companies refer to customers by their full names. If an email or a phone call does not refer to the person by a full name, it is probably a vishing scam.

– Never call a telephone number specified in the phone call or email. Always call the phone number on the back of the Credit card or bank statement.

– If you receive a call claiming to be from your credit card provider, hang up the call and call back to the number on the back of your credit card.

– If you have already given the information on such a call, place a call to your Credit Card provider or bank and notify them immediately.

Secure Computing is a provider of security appliances, firewalls, and identity and access management solutions.
