Nasa and Arizona State University have worked with Google to combine Google Maps technology with scientific maps of Mars. Google Mars allows users to explore Mars through an elevation map, a visible-imagery map and an infrared-imagery map.

Chikai Ohazama of Google Earth team has posted in the Official Google blog:

“NASA researchers Noel Gorelick and Michael Weiss-Malik from Arizona State University worked with us to combine Google Maps technology with some of the most detailed scientific maps of Mars ever made”. [source]

With Google Mars it is possible to explore the red planet in three different ways:

an elevation map shows color-coded peaks and valleys,

a visible-imagery map shows what we would actually see,

and an infrared-imagery map shows the detail our eyes would miss.

Google has announced that it has prepared Google Mars in commemoration of Lowell’s birthday.
