Google has acquired Writely. Writely is an online word processing service which allows users to store and edit text documents online.


Google has acquired Writely. Writely is an online word processing service which allows users to store and edit text documents online.

Writely also allows users to share selected documents with other users. Text documents can be edited collaborately by groups.

Barry Schnitt, Spokesman for Google, said: “We acquired Writely for the innovative technology and talented team. We’re thrilled to have them here.” [Source]

Following the acquisition, Writely has closed new subscriptions to its website. Writely is working on shifting to Google’s software technology. For current users, the website and its services will remain unchanged

Claudia Carpenter, developer at Writely, said: “The Google announcement will undoubtedly generate a lot of interest in Writely — perhaps too much — and we’re committed, on your behalf, to keeping our current service running smoothly.
