American Red Cross says they are using VoIP technology, Internet phone bandwith, routed over Very Small Aperture Terminals (VSAT) to communicate with field operations in the region affected by Hurricane Katrina.

American Red Cross is using Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology routed over Very Small Aperture Terminals (VSAT) to communicate with field operations in the region affected by Hurricane Katrina. Any type of phone call can be routed through VSAT but the services will be better with the internet bandwith.

It is reported that volunteers are preparing a hundred more VSATs and hundreds of IP phones for shipment in the next few days.

The advanced VoIP network uses Cisco Call Manager to process these calls.
