Web 2.0 — is it Really Crap?

OK, OK — this is starting to get out of hand! I need your help on something and I’m hoping you’ll agree.

A couple of weeks ago, I was being interviewed on another marketer’s teleconference call. We were talking about publishing and marketing online and all my many years of experience when the guy interviewing me asked me, out of the blue, what I thought about all the noise we’re hearing these days about Web 2.0 (you know — MySpace, FaceBook, Squidoo, CraigsList, blogs — those kind of sites).

I replied: “Web 2.0 is CRAP!”

Then we were interrupted by a really great question, so we moved on quickly, without my ever really explaining why I made that comment.

I WAS going to explain, somehow.

Almost immediately, however, I was pounced upon by some upstart newbies in Internet marketing just starting to make a decent name for themselves — Jeff Wark and Lori Steffen.

They’ve started literally calling me out on that statement I made about Web 2.0 — telling their blog readers I must have lost it and I’ve been at this too long and I can’t possibly understand Web 2.0 because, if I did, I would NEVER call it Crap!

Hey — I’ve worked with these two people. They’re SHARP and TALENTED. They’ve made huge inroads building their business online since starting just a short while back — but they’re newbies, FRESH ON THE SCENE. They couldn’t POSSIBLY know what I meant when I said that.

I was going to respond — until they got tired of waiting for me (I have a busy schedule) and took the whole argument public.

Now I refuse to respond. NOt to them directly. Why should I?

When someone who has been doing what I do for as long as I’ve been doing it says something, it should mean something. If I say you should hold your headlines to 17 words or less, that should be good enough. If I say Web 2.0 is crap, you should believe I have my reasons for that.

I’d love it if you would join in the discussion over at a new blog Jeff and Lori just put up. Keep ’em honest over there! Point out that I must know what’s up or I wouldn’t have said anything — and if I’m approached the right way I could be convinced to discuss my point further.

Post a comment on their blog and send it to me at marketquest@sysop.com, with the subject line: “WEB 2.0 IS” and I’ll fill you in on EXACTLY why I said what I said. But ONLY if you help me out here and post a comment.

You don’t HAVE to agree with my position on this. You can agree with Jeff and Lori if you’re so inclined. Just post something over there and you’ll get my explanation soon.

Fair enough?
