Symantec has launched Internet Threat Meter. The service provides information on risk-levels associated with specific online activities, including Email, Web Activities, Instant Messaging and File Sharing.


Symantec has launched Internet Threat Meter. The service provides information on risk-levels associated with specific online activities, including Email, Web Activities, Instant Messaging and File Sharing.

The Threat Meter has identified email as low risk. The threats associated with email, according to Symantec, are malicious code and fraudulent messages.

The Threat Meter has identified web activities as medium risk. The meter has also warned of a phishing attack that is targeting eBay customers. Symantec has also advised that users should disable JavaScript while browsing eBay.

The meter has identified Instant Messaging as low risk. Symantec advices users to use normal security measures while using IM.

File sharing is identified as medium risk. Symantec warns of a new virus, W32.Polip that targets peer-to-peer users using Windows. Semantec advises users not to download potentially malicious file types. W32.Polip infects executable (.exe) and screensaver (.scr) files.
