The FBI has warned the public about spam emails that are supposedly sent by the FBI but are actually not. The mail carries an attachment which when downloaded, installs a virus on the user’s computer.

The FBI informs the public that they never send un-solicited emails to members of the pubic.

The scam emails are sent from addresses such as mail@fbi.gov, post@fbi.gov and admin@fbi.gov. The mail requests users to open the attachment and answer the questions.

When the attachment is opened, it installs a variant of the w32/sober virus on the user’s computer. The virus may cause harm to the user’s computer.

“Opening e-mail attachments from an unknown sender is a risky and dangerous endeavor as such attachments frequently contain viruses that can infect the recipient’s computer. The FBI strongly encourages computer users not to open such attachments.” [Source]

Users who have received such an email are requested to report it to the Internet Crime Complaint Center.
