AOL is going to offer a free phone number to AIM users. AOL is also going to launch AIM Pages, a social networking service.


AOL is going to offer a free phone number to AIM users. The phone number will allow people to call AIM users from a regular phone while they are online.

The AOL Phoneline is a free VOIP service which will allow AIM users to make free PC to PC calls when they are online. Members can use a regular headsets and microphone to make and receive calls.

“The move brings AOL Instant Messenger, or AIM, closer in functionality to voice-oriented applications like eBay Inc.’s Skype and so-called voice over Internet services.” [Source]

The outgoing calls from the free phone number offered by AOL will be charged at a flat rate of $14.90 per month for unlimited calling. The introductory price is $9.95 for users who subscribe when the service starts.

The AOL Phoneline service is set for launch on May 16, 2006.

AOL is also going to launch AIM Pages. AIM Pages will be a social networking service.
