Pine Tree Legal has sued LegalMatch over Internet ads. Pine Tree claims that, when a computer user types “Pine Tree Legal Assistance” into web search engines, ads from LegalMatch appear.

According to Pine Tree Legal’s lawsuit, these ads appear in search engines, including Yahoo, AltaVista, MSN, Lycos, InfoSpace and Hotbot.

The advertisements read “Pine Tree Legal Assistance” but they are taken to LegalMatch.com’s web page.

Pine Tree Legal provides legal services for free to the underprivilaged of Maine. But according to the lawsuit, LegalMatch charges a fee for its services.

Hugh Calkins of Pine Tree said: “The case is about people trying to mislead our client population to commercial Web sites that they can’t afford.” [Source]

The suit was filed by Bernstein Shur, a Portland-based law firm on Feb. 28 in U.S. District Court on behalf of Pine Tree Legal.
