Dirson has reported in his blog “Google’s just launched ‘Google Base’, a service to insert and share all types of content: events, housing, jobs, products, second-hand vehicles, … (view image). The information will be included in the main Google search index and other Google products like Froogle and Google Local”.

eBay’s shares fell 5.6% because of the rumour that Google may soon allow users to sell products online.

Dirson’s blog has also said that “Gary Price received a mail from a Google spokesperson, who claims that today’s webpage is “en early-stage test of a product that enables content owners to easily send their content to Google, but we don’t have anything to announce at this time”. [source]

Robert Peck, Bear Stearns Cos. analyst has beed quoted as saying, “Should this proposed product be utilized as speculated, we would think that it is a large incremental positive for Google and a large incremental negative for EBay. He said he had been unable to confirm the plans with the company”. [source]

Google could announce more details at Google Zeitgeist conference.

The service is hosted at a new subdomain called base.google.com. A screen shot of the service shows a screen inviting users to

“Post your items on Google.

Google Base is Google’s database into which you can add all types of content. We’ll host your content and make it searchable online for free.

Examples of items you can find in Google Base:

Description of your party planning service
Articles on current events from your website
Listing of your used car for sale
Database of protein structures

You can describe any item you post with attributes, which will help people find it when they search Google Base. In fact, based on the relevance of your items, they may also be included in the main Google search index and other Google products like Froogle and Google Local”. [source]

Whit Andrews, vice president of research at Gartner said, “In the last 10 years we have seen a number of initiatives intended to make it easier to build a data-driven Web site. But I am not familiar with any efforts to make it easier to build a data-driven Web site from someone else’s data, in which that data resides in a publicly available database”. [source]
