John Hurd’s latest ‘e-Wealth Daily’ article:

Do You Work Here?

Just the other evening, I was out with my partner to help her find a new raincoat.

While we were going through a few racks looking for her size, a woman approached us and asked if we could find another of the shirt she was carrying in her hands.

Well, we exchanged confused looks and then I said, “Sorry, we don’t actually work here.” Embarrassed and a little upset, this woman quickly turned on her heel and made a beeline to the cash counter looking for an actual employee.

Now, this isn’t the first time this has happened to me. Maybe I just have an approachable face, but I believe there is something else going on here.

You see, the store we were in was a large sporting goods store. The racks and shelves are just stuffed full of clothing and everything else you may need on a weekend sports marathon. And there are plenty of employees roaming the store; however, they all wear street clothes and can only be identified by a small pin worn on their chests.

I’ve even had a hard time finding someone who worked in there, not daring to embarrass a fellow shopper.

I believe this is because our culture has allowed us to become more and more casual. The store employees are allowed to dress like the customers; however, for those of us looking for people dressed like employees, this becomes rather confusing.

Appearance is important, no matter what many people say. There’s an old adage that states, “Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.” And I believe it can certainly ring true. You don’t necessarily need to dress in the finest designer goods, but, if you’re meeting with potential partners or clients, you want them to know just by how you’re dressed that you’re someone they can trust.

Take a look at your closet. Does your suit present you as a professional person? If it’s starting to fray and the elbows are worn, then maybe it’s time to visit the tailor shop.
