Gaining Control Over the Recent eMail Assault

Computer World reported spammer now use images to get around filters. They are also attaching their spam to legitimate emails.

Just dealing with normal email can eat up your time but now with these latest tactics it’s becoming an even bigger drain. To make matters worse, Sophos Security firm released a report citing the US send the most spam… garnishing the #1 spot of the top 12 spam-relaying countries in 2006.

Opening an image laden spam email can signal a live active recipient on the other end. Making you more vulnerable to receive additional email plus other unwanted nasty stuff.

A program I use to help combat email deluged is Mailwasher. It allows me to preview my email on the server before downloading it. It only previews email in text format. No repercussion with images. I can bounce the email back to the sender. This “tricks” the sender into thinking it’s a dead email address.

Most of my favorite ezines now publish in RSS format. So I switched over to receive them via my RSS reader which happens to be Thunderbird. I can stay up to date on what’s happening without dealing with email.

Using Mailwasher and receiving information through RSS saves me lots of time and headaches.
