Compilation Offers or Writing Your Own eBook?

I recently received a flyer in the mail hyping the opportunity to be the co-author in a book that an Internet Guru was writing. The deal was that he actually wrote the whole book himself. But for a hefty price, he would put your name on one chapter of the book and he would do all the marketing making you an “instant expert”.

What an emotional appeal that has! You don’t have to actually do anything, just pay the money and everything will be done for you!

This really bothered me because when I was first getting started, I got involved in a compilation book. It was a little bit different than this “opportunity” but the bottom line is I paid money, it didn’t increase my expert status, and I have books collecting dust in my house! (Heard that story before?)

In all fairness, I was supposed to go and do book signings and sell the books myself. But in retrospect, I believe it was a bust from the start because one article on my story in a book wasn’t going to generate much excitement and get people to come out and buy the book-since this guy is an “expert” I’m sure more people will want his book than the one I was in, but it still doesn’t feel right in my gut.

The point is that I’m very skeptical now of these kinds of offers and you should be too. The rationale in this offer is that people use ghostwriters all the time. But I think there is a distinction to be made here. If you are already an expert in your field and you know your stuff and you give it to a ghostwriter to pretty much compile it and smooth it out, that’s one thing.

But if you put your name on something that someone else wrote, ride their coattails, deceive the public, and don’t really know the subject that well, that’s a completely other deal. In this case, you could be a complete newbie, and get credit for a chapter written by an expert-which I would suspect is the group this person is most appealing to.

Now people start coming to you expecting you to be an expert and if you don’t know what you’re doing this strategy could blow up in your face and ruin your reputation right out of the gate!

So the only way I see this remotely working is if you are already an expert and want to leverage someone else’s marketing to get your name out there even more.

Having said that, I firmly believe that you’d be a lot better off investing in learning how to create and market your own ebooks instead because you will learn an easy-to-follow system that you can use over and over to create as many streams of income as you want! And you can easily turn your ebooks into books. Plus authoring your own ebooks is what really ramps up your credibilitly and expert status.

And it goes back to the old saying which I love, give the man a fish and he’ll eat for a day, teach him how to fish and he’ll eat for a lifetime. Personally I’d rather learn how to fish!

And I really think it has to do with having integrity too. This just doesn’t feel like integrity to me. But that’s me. You may feel differently. But if you think about what I’m saying and it makes sense to you please be careful. Really evaluate offers before you jump in.

And if you agree with me that it’s better to learn a system that’s proven to work then spending your money chasing “easy money” which always has it’s own price anyway and you’re ready to start the new year right then go to www.theebookcoach.com/coachingspecial.htm and check out my individual coaching program.

I’m making a super offer through tomorrow December 31, midnight Hawaii time! You’ll get an IPOD NANO and over $24,000 in incredibly bonuses including lifetime support after the course is complete.

And whatever you do I wish you all the success you deserve in 2007!
