How To Convert VHS Videotape To DVD

One of the benefits of publishing a multimedia newsletter is that I often get asked some interesting questions. Just the other day one of our readers asked how to convert his VHS videotapes into a DVD.

If you’re like me you probably have had a video camera for some years. And most of your video may well be on a VHS videotape. Most of mine are on 8mm or Hi8 but the output is the same. They play to VHS.

Only a few years ago just about every movie you could buy was on VHS. But today you’ll be hard pressed to find movies that are not on DVD.

So what does that tell us? In a very short time buying a VHS tape player will be a thing of the past. If it’s not a DVD then you won’t be able to watch it. Of course, a few of us might hold on to our old VHS tape players. As a video producer I still have a few working decks from my video duplication unit.

But everyday fewer people will be watching VHS tapes. Which means if you have some old tapes you need to convert them into something you can use.

And so the question is very appropriate. In this week’s edition I located a simple and inexpensive way of converting VHS to DVD. In fact, the tool I found seems to be made for just about anyone who wants to save their valuable VHS to DVD without becoming a geek.

To create this video I had to do some research to find a tool that would be easy to use and not cost much. It’s really easy to use the state of the art tools and software. But most people are just interested in the easiest way possible.

Note that when you are teaching people don’t give them a bunch of options. Most people want an answer, they don’t want options. They don’t want to think. If they wanted to think they wouldn’t ask you the quesiton. So give an answer… one answer!

Notes From The Multimedia Guy
As I mentioned above, when you are training people most of us tend to show all the various ways of doing something. But our viewers want answers, not options.

Years ago I was teaching a seminar called “What the rich know that you don’t”. So very quickly my friends started thinking I was a financial wizard. So much that one of my friends came to me with a problem. His mother had just died and left him a considerable amount of money.

His question to me (the financial wizard 🙂 was, “What should he do with the money?”

I started giving him a list of investments and ways of making the money grow.

My friend then said, “Don’t give me a bunch of options. Just tell me what to do with the money!”

Consider that your customers are just like my friend. They are coming to you because you are the expert. They want the answers. They don’t need a bunch of options.

Just the answer. Give it to them clearly and they will love you!
