How To Be Rich Without Being Perfect
When was the last time you sent out a product that wasn’t perfect? Or maybe it wasn’t quite as good as you could have done? Or are you still working on that first product, getting it just right?
I know I’m guilty of trying to make my products perfect. Yet when I look at successful Product Developers I find that they all have two things in common. They all have mistakes in their products. And all their products are selling.
A classic example is Microsoft. Rarely do they ship software that initially works out of the box. But they usually beat everyone else to market. And eventually they do get it right.
Recently Stewart Hu, the blogging tutorial expert at WordPress Tutorials, put it this way, “It’s amazing how rich you can get without being perfect. Imperfection equals action.”
His point was simple. When you try to be perfect you take forever to develop your product. In fact, you usually never get it finished. Yet the successful Internet product developers and marketers don’t worry about making their product perfect. Their goal is to be the first to get their product out and then fix it if necessary.
A few days ago I was talking to one of my students. He had used my multimedia training course to create a multimedia product for his website. It was a video production of a series of PowerPoint slides with music and text. His video looked great until he pointed out that some of the transitions were too short and some people were complaining.
My first thought was that he needed to redo the video… to make it perfect. But his music matched the presentation and it probably would take a lot of extra time to do over.
And then I looked at his work from the “Imperfection” point of view. The video played. It had all the material for someone to watch including controls to pause the video or to move back and forth if they want to. In short, everything was there for people to watch the video.
By not being perfect my student got his video production done and online. And the best part is that he’s actually getting feedback from his customers, proving that people are watching his production. Plus his next video will be that much better because of that feedback.
The key to online riches: Get it done and get it out to your customers. Imperfection does equal action. And the best part is that it puts money in your bank account. You can see his video at http://www.pets-911.com/
