Building a Successful Product Delivery Web Site
Creating and building a web site that becomes a household name is the goal of many a web entrepreneur. When attempting to create a useful and compelling web site, it is important to understand what Internet users want from a web site, and what they are hoping to achieve by visiting your site.
It is important to understand how the Internet differs from the offline world, and to understand that some things that would be welcome in the brick and mortar world are actually an impediment when brought to the Internet. For instance, a web site full of attractive graphics or pictures can be frustrating to the first time visitor if it takes a long time to load. Many Internet users, particularly those with slower dial up connections, will become frustrated with a slow loading web site and click away without every seeing your content.
It is important that the web site contain just what the visitor is looking for, and very little else. For instance, Google is so successful because it helps people find what they need, and find it quickly. Take a good look at Google’s web site and you will see a successful design in action. The web site is very bare, but it is very functional and hugely successful. Of course, Google is not a product delivery web site, but the same approach can help the smart web entrepreneur to build a successful product delivery business.
When the Internet was much younger, there was quite an emphasis on building the fanciest and most impressive site possible, but that emphasis has certainly changed. In many ways, this is a result of the ubiquitous nature of these fancy tools. These days, when we see a fancy Flash intro on a web site, we are as likely to be annoyed as impressed. After all, that fancy Flash web site intro that loads so quickly on your own server will take quite awhile to load for the first time on a visitor’s computer.
Downloading a large flash intro or graphic image is likely to frustrate and alienate potential subscribers to your site. After all, they are probably coming to your web site looking for information and content, not to watch a fancy animation or lengthy introduction.
If you have something to sell at your web site, whether it is content, a product, or a service, you should present it in a clear, concise manner and provide your visitors with accurate, well written and timely information. Many offline marketers and advertisers do not understand the unique nature of the web, and therefore find it more difficult to adapt their offline natures to the more challenging nature of the Internet.
The successful web site owner should be built for speed. It should load quickly, and capture the attention of the visitor quickly. The fact is that people are in a hurry these days, and if you do not capture the attention of visitors to your web site in the first 10 to 30 seconds, chances are you never will. In order to make the most of this 10 to 30 second window, it is important to keep your graphics small, and to compress them if you can.
The smaller your graphics, the faster they will load. It is also important to avoid flashy technology such as Java, Flash and streaming audio whenever possible. If you do use such technologies, they should be used sparingly and used only to enhance the value of the web site.
It is also important to know your market, and to cater to their needs. If you can provide the services and products your target audience wants better than your competition, you will be successful, and you will continue to attract new visitors and new customers. The key to providing interesting, compelling and useful products and services is to know your market, and to know how to market your web site effectively. One of the best ways to achieve this marketing goal is to purchase a license for an existing site. This approach can save the smart web entrepreneur plenty of money and lots of time.
