Selling Audio Books – A Look at the Various Format
When most of us were growing up, books were available only in one format – on paper. Whether they were paperback novels or hardcover text books, paper was the one and only format, and paper books are of course still very popular today. These days, however, audio books are capturing an ever increasing share of the market, and this trend is only likely to grow.
When audio books first came onto the market some 20 years or so ago, these books were available only as books on tape, and the selection was generally limited to only the current top bestsellers and perhaps a business title or two.
When CDs became the format of choice for music, audio books followed suit, and soon books on CD became all the rage. By this time, lower production costs had allowed more titles to be available, but the selection was still somewhat limited.
These days of course audio books are still available on good old fashioned cassette tapes, as well as on CD. However, these days there are additional choices that would not have been feasible only a few short years ago. One of the most exciting and fastest growing segments of the audio book market these days is the audio book that can be downloaded and stored on a portable music player or similar device. This format has a number of important advantages, one of which of course is the ability to store far more information in a smaller space. We all have plenty of things to carry around already, and lugging around a portage cassette player or portable CD player can add to the burden. The ability to listen to audio books directly on a tiny, compact MP3 player or iPod can certainly reduce the strain and make thing much more enjoyable.
There are a number of advantages and disadvantages of all audio book formats, and it is important for those interested in selling audio books to understand how these advantages and disadvantages can affect the success of their business.
The original audio books, of course, came as cassette tapes, and there are still plenty of these books on tape on the market. The main advantage of the book on tape is that virtually everyone has a tape recorder or tape player, whether it is a portable walkman style device or a home stereo.
There are a number of things people do not like about cassettes, however, including the fact that they are bulky, and that typically only one or two chapters will fit on each side of the cassette, making it necessary to change tapes often.
Audio books on CD have been around for over a decade now, and they address some of the problems with books on tape, while sharing a major advantage. These days just about everyone has a CD player, whether on the computer, in the car or in the home stereo. And CDs do hold more information than cassette tapes, making CD changes less frequent, while not eliminating them altogether.
These days of course the MP3 file just may be the most popular audio format, and for this reason more and more sellers of audio books are offering the choice to download those audio books directly to a portable listening device.
Audio books in electronic format certainly have a number of important advantages, both for sellers and buyers. For buyers they offer a superior listening experience and take up much less physical space than audio books on either cassette tapes or CDs. For sellers, offering audio books in MP3 or other electronic format provides for lower costs and greater customer satisfaction. With all these advantages it is easy to see why these electronic audio books are so popular.
