Proven methods for building your subscriber list

Few things are as important to success as an affiliate as the list of subscribers. You can use your list of subscribers to successfully market your affiliates’ products and earn yourself higher commissions. And the beauty of a subscriber list is that you can tap that resource again and again. Any time you add an affiliate or begin marketing a new product, your subscriber list is there to serve you.

Since the list of subscribers will be such an integral part of your business, it just makes sense to put lots of hard work and planning into that important asset. Your list of subscribers is an unlimited resource for you, and it is much better to build your own list. There are of course many list owners willing to provide a list for a fee, but building your own list is a much better approach.

Where do I start?
This is probably the most common question I encounter from new affiliates seeking to start their own profitable subscriber list. As with all things, it is best to start at the beginning. As soon as your web site is live, put up a subscription form in the most visible place on your web site. For most web sites, this will be near the top of the page. Be sure that your visitors’ eyes will be drawn to that subscription form.

The goal of the subscription form is to collect email addresses. One great way to urge visitors to your web site to become subscribers is to offer some sort of valuable offer of free information like a newsletter, free article or report. Offering freebies like this is a great way to get visitors to become subscribers, and these kinds of giveaways can be created at close to zero cost.

The Opt-in email
One of the most important things to remember when setting up a subscriber list is to use the opt-in method. This means that your messages should have an unsubscribe link at the bottom of your page. It is very important to provide subscribers with a way to unsubscribe. If you neglect this simple step, you will be reported as a spammer, and it can be notoriously difficult to remove yourself from a spam list.

It is best to use the double opt-in method for extra safety. The double opt-in sign up method can increase your targeted subscriber list by verifying that the people who sign up truly want the information you have to offer. With the double opt-in method, when someone subscribes to your newsletter, article or other freebie, an email is sent to the address they provided. The user has to respond to the email you send in order to be added to the list of subscribers. This serves as verification that they truly signed up for your freebie and are interested in your content. It is also the best way to ensure that the email addresses you collect are valid.

After you have created your list of opt-in subscribers, it is time to decide how often to contact your subscribers. Many affiliates go with a monthly or every other week approach to broadcast emails. This interval seems to provide a good balance, and it gives you as the affiliate time to come up with something that the subscribers to your list will find of value.

When pushing your affiliate link, it is important to present information in an informative, friendly manner, and not be overly pushy. For instance, it is important to communicate the benefits of the product being sold ““ to answer the “what’s in it for me question.”

Of course none of this magic can happen until you have a solid list of subscribers to market to. Building your list of subscribers is one of the most critical things you will do as an affiliate, and it is vital to take the time required to build a good list of subscribers.
