IM and Image Based Attacks on the Rise
IM and image based attacks are on the rise, according to a report by Postini. According to Postini, the trend for hackers to attack corporate networks with low protection Instant Messaging systems and image-based spam is continuing.
In June 2006, Postini has identified and stopped new IM malware attacks. Malware identified by Postini include:
– Worm.pic-myspace-info
– Secunia/Yahoo.dos.vuln
The Worm.pic-myspace-info worm installs itself on a user’s PC and infects the IM client on the user’s computer. The worm then sends itself to the user’s friends list.
The Secunia/Yahoo.dos.vuln worm launches denial-of-service attacks and crashes users’ Yahoo Messenger clients by sending bundles of messages.
According to Postini, World Cup spam and image-based spam has increased to 25% as of December 2005 and is in the same position till now.
The top 5 viruses for June 2006, according to Postini, include:
– Netsky
– Mytob
– Mime
– Bagle
– Mydoom
