Just What is the Tag and Ping Method?
Many web site owners by now have heard about the tag and ping phenomena, but many of them are still somewhat unsure exactly what this method entails. At first blush, tag and ping can seem complicated, but it is actually quite simple to understand and easy to use. It is important not to overcomplicate this method, but it is important to gather enough information to use it effectively.
Tagging is still a fairly new method of categorizing web sites, blog posts, images and other internet content. In some ways tagging is similar to the search engines with which we are all familiar, but with one key difference. While machines, known in the technological world as spiders, do the categorizing for search engines, with tagging that categorizing is done by human beings. This human touch is often able to provide a much more useful set of results than search engines and their spiders are able to provide, and for this reason tagging has been gaining steadily in popularity.
A tag is a brief description of the content being described, working much the same way as the keyword or keyword phrase. This article, for instance, may be tagged with the word “tag” or with the phrase “tag and ping”. One useful aspect of tagging and pinging is that more than one tag can be applied to the same content.
When a user goes to a blog search web site such as the popular Technorati.com, they can perform a search. If they search for “tag” or “tag and ping”, they will find the blog posts that have been categorized under that tag.
One of the best things about tagging and pinging is that the new post will appear within a few minutes, and it will appear at the very top of the search results. That post will remain at the top of the results until another entry is made using the same tag. At that time the original post would drop to second in the listings, then third and so on. That means that for at least a time the new post will be right at the top, where it will be available for view by anyone interested in the content it contains. It is easy to see why tagging and pinging is so good at building exposure and driving the targeted traffic that is so vital to generating sales.
