The Secret of the Amazing Left Hand Glove

Great marketing is all about getting your marketing message noticed and consumed by the people that would be most likely to buy whatever it is you have to offer.

I’m about to show you one of the best examples of this principle in action that has ever crossed my desk.

It was sent to me by Mike Lewis of Custer, SD. Mike received this package in the mail and took some photos of it and passed it on to me.

(By the way, if you have any great examples of hot marketing ideas in action, please forward them to me and if they’re really good, I’ll publish them in my newsletter.)

How a Small Bank Used a Simple Glove to Drive a Stampede of Traffic to their Local Office

The First Western Bank of Custer, SD needed a unique way to get local business owners interested in their banking services and hopefully, open an account with them.

They wanted to knew that it was difficult to capture the attention of a small busijness owner, because they were extremely busy putting out fires and running their own businesses.

They thought about sending out letters and postcards, but they knew that business owners are simply too distracted with other stuff to take time to read a postcard or a letter from a bank.

So they put their heads together to come up with a marketing campagin that would force the business owner to take notice of their mailing.

That’s when they came up with the idea of…

The Magic of the “One Handed Glove”

When people have cold hands they wear gloves to warm them up. No one just wears one glove. They always wear two gloves.

So the bank guys said to themselves, “What if we gave the business owners a really nice left-handed glove and then ask them to visit our bank office to get the right hand glove?”

Bing! The light came on.

So they created the “right-handed glove campaign.”

The bank purchased a bunch of left-handed gloves and then sent them to all the local business owners in a big package in an envelope with the headline, “First Western Bank, Your Right Hand.”

Pretty clever.

In their letter to the business owner they start out with a definition of “right hand,” which means, “being of great assistant” (i.e. “my right hand man.”)

What a great headline and lead in.

Here’s How You Can Use this Same Technique to Drive Traffic to Your Business

The “one glove” technique can be used in a number of ways. Just use your imagination and you can find dozens of ways to use this technique.

Here’s a few….

1. If you’re a clothing retailer you can send your best customers one single sock and then invite them to come in to your retail store to claim the other sock.

2. If you’re an oil and lube shop you could send your best customers that are ready to get a new servicing, you could send them a new oil filter and tell them to bring the filter in and you will put it in their car for them.

3. If you’re a local restaurant you could send your best customers a photo of two deliciously free deserts and invite them to come in to get the desserts when they come in for a meal.

4. If you’re a coach or consultant you could send your best customers a CD with a special report on it that is locked and then invite to come to your website for the unlock code to read the report.

5. If you’re an jeweler you could send out a fake diamond and invite your best customers to come in and allow you to mount a real diamond in their favorite mounting.

You get the idea. Use your imagination. The possibilities are endless.
