Tag and Ping Strategy ““ Finding the Most Popular Tags
Just as finding the most popular keywords is important to search engine optimization, so too is finding the most popular tags important to a successful tag and ping strategy. It is important to know what tags others are using, and to incorporate that knowledge into your own tag and ping strategy.
The first step in finding the most popular tags is to head over to the Techniorati web site and click on the tags tab. This will provide what is called a “Tag Cloud”. The tag cloud is very easy to read and very simple to understand. The bigger the font, the more popular the tag. These popular tags can provide great ideas for new web sites and new blogs.
Under each tag will be a number of different related tags. For instance, under the tag music you may find tags for rap, rock, folk, country and other popular forms of music. Using these tags is a great way to come up with creative and useful categories for the blog posts you create, and a great way to choose tags for your web sites as you go forward.
It is of course important to be a good net citizen and never spam the bookmarking sites. These social bookmarking sites are very popular, and as their popularity increases they are increasingly looking for ways to keep spammers off their sites and provide their visitors with truly useful content. It is important to remember that these social bookmarking sites are staffed with human editors, and those editors will not hesitate to flag any site or post they deem to be inappropriate. It is important to keep this in mind and to provide real content and real value. Even if a spam post does make it through, it will generate no traffic. After all, the beauty of social bookmarking sites is that they rely on a network of ordinary users to determine what is, and what is not, relevant and useful.
For this reason, it is important to always tag web sites and blog posts with descriptions that are relevant to their content. While it is always a good idea to choose popular tags, it is even more important to choose tags that truly describe what the web site, or the blog post, is all about.
