The value of backlink

I am now in Penang of Malaysia for fun and business.

You know, my team is working on a project Backlink video. The aim of this project is to help beginners to understand what backlink is and how to build it properly.

Basically, we classify the backlinks into 2 types:

1. With pagerank value

2. Without pagerank value

1. With Pagerank Value

This means the backlink can give you “pagerank value”. Supposed the site backlinking to you with PR5, most likely your site will get PR3-4. It depends how many external sites are on this page. However, this kind of backlink may not give you very good traffic. For example, directory submission like Dmoz.org. If your website is listed in the directory, this means it will be listed in Google Directory too. But you cannot expect there are huge volume of traffic from these directories coz most people will not search information via them.

2. Without pagerank value

This means the backlink will not add “pagerank” value to your site. However, it doesn’t mean the backlink will not drive traffic to it.

For example, social bookmarking (someone called it Tag & Ping) Recently, a scam spreads in the industry, by this strategy, you will get backlinks from PR5 or 6 pages easily and your site pagerank will be boosted….

Is it true?

Definitely not. You can view the ‘source code’ of the page e.g. del.icio.us. Let say http://del.icio.us/tag/taxonomies. You can find a tag ‘ref=no follow’ after the link you post to this site.

Definition of “ref=no follow”

nofollow indicates a behavior rather than a relationship from which the behavior should be inferred as appropriate for the useragent. rel values should be nouns that indicates what the resource being referenced is in relation to the source.

This means, the pagerank of your site will not be boosted.

HOWEVER, it doesn’t mean this strategy is useless.

Since most surfers they visit websites by search engines and hyperlinks. Your site can still get good traffic from the backlinks in the social bookmarking sites (supposed you pick the right keywords with reasonable competition)

To learn more about backlink strategy, you can go to check backlink video.

Follow Up Post: Why do you need backlinks?

After showing my previous article to my friends, they asked me why you don’t mention the backlink can help the site ranking?

Basically, your site ranking (e.g. Google) depends on the competition between the sites instead of pagerank alone.

You know, keyword is the primary factor for the website competition. The websites compete for the higher ranking for a specific keyword. Their rankings depend on relevancy of off-site (backlink) and on-site (the keywords in the page) factor.

The sequence is like:
keyword > off-site > on-site

Pagerank is not everything. If it was everything, then Google would have ranked no.1 for any keywords like Yahoo, Hotmail…etc. Make sense?

For the off-site factor, yes, it is backlink. More websites link to you, your site will get advantage to rank higher.

For the on-site factor, definitely the surfers will click your link after they see the keywords on the “Title” & “Description” in SERPs.

There are tons of tips about backlink concepts and strategies, you can go to our backlink video section to find more details.
