Tagging and the Use of Social Bookmarking
Social bookmarking is fast becoming one of the most powerful search tools on the internet, and the good news is that savvy web site owners can take advantage of this increasing popularity to gain exposure for themselves, their affiliates and their products and services. In order to use this important tool, however, it is important to understand how it works and how to use it best. It is also important to understand the limitations of social bookmarking, and to use other means for what social bookmarking is unable to achieve.
For instance, tagging is not the best way to gain high quality one way links from other webmasters. The best way to gain these valuable backlinks is to provide content that those other webmasters find useful and compelling. Social bookmarking and tagging can be used to gain the traffic it takes to get other webmasters to see how great your content is. Any backlinks gained directly from social bookmarking should be looked upon as a welcome bonus, not as the goal.
Tagging and Pinging
The terms tagging and pinging are often used together, and they naturally go together. Tagging and pinging refers to having your blog posts tag automatically and then ping the bookmark sites to have the new blog posts automatically added. This process is known, of course, as tag and ping.
There are many different kinds of blog software on the market that support tagging, and a quick search is likely to reveal many different names. You will likely see names like Blogger, b2, Ecto, Nucleus, TypePad and WordPress. It is of course important to choose a product that does everything you need it to do, including tagging. Like any other tool, the blogging software you use will only be as effective as the use to which you put it. Understanding the concept of tagging and pinging, however, can provide a great head start and a great deal of exposure for your web site.
