Getting Started by Tagging Your Web Site

Tagging is one of the most important ways to take advantage of the new phenomenon known as social bookmarking. Unlike traditional bookmarks, which are stored locally and only available on a single PC, social bookmarking sites allow members to access their own bookmarks no matter where they may be. Whether the member is in an internet cafe, a coffee shop, a library, the workplace, school or anywhere else, he or she instantly has access to his or her favorite sites.

In addition, social bookmarking sites take this concept a step further, providing users with the ability to access the favorite web sites of others. This is a great way for web surfers to find the best and most relevant web sites, without having to rely on sometimes fickle and unreliable search engine results. This method of browsing the internet is quickly becoming popular, and savvy marketers can benefit from its increasing visibility by tagging their own web sites.

Tagging simply refers to placing a descriptive word or phrase on the web site, blog post or image. Those familiar with keywords will no doubt understand what tags are and how they work. By tagging a web site, users can instantly gain exposure for the web site and the products and services it has to offer. In this way, social bookmarking can help the web site owner to gain an immediate increase in traffic. This traffic increase can be especially profound if the site is tagged with a popular subject. It only takes a few seconds for the newly bookmarked site to appear. Best of all, the site will generally appear at the top of the list, at least until another user bookmarks a site with the same tag.

In addition, many of these social bookmarking sites will provide web site owners with a link to add their bookmarking function to their internet favorites folder. In order to start tagging, one needs to create a new folder called bookmark sites. All of the bookmark and tag links will be added to this new folder.

One side benefit of tagging is the ability to gain backlinks, but it is important to remember that not all backlinks will pass page rank to your site. There will of course be some that do, but it is best not to count on social bookmarking as your primary means of gaining one way links. The only true way to gain good backlinks is to provide high quality content that another web site owner will find valuable and compelling enough to link to your site.
