IronPort has warned of an increase in image-based spam. Image-based spam do not contain any text in the email, instead they contain a .gif or .jpeg file with an image.
Image-based spam can bypass traditional content and signature scanning, according to IronPort.
The image in the email contains the spam message in the form of text and graphics.
Image-based spam have increased to over 12% of all spam in June 2006, compared to 1% in June 2005.
Additional findings include:
– Over 5 million image-based spam are sent every day.
– 78% of these pass through first and second generation spam filters.
– Over 80% of spam comes from zombie PCs.
– Spammers rotate through zombie networks by changing the IP address of the source of spam every few hours.
– In June 2005, the average length of advertising a domain in a spam URL was 48 hours.
– Spam volumes increased 40% worldwide in June 2006, compared to April 2006.
– In April 2006, over 35 million domains were registered.
– Out of these, 32 million were never paid for and expired.
