Understanding Tags and Keywords
If you are familiar with internet marketing, you are no doubt also familiar with the concept of keywords. Using keywords and key phrases to find information across the vast reaches of the internet is a well established concept, and one that the leading search engines have been able to use to their advantage.
As new forms of web content, such as blogs and social networking sites, have come online, however, the world of online search has begun to change, and it is important for all web marketers to keep up with this ever changing technology in order to gain maximum exposure for their companies, their products and their affiliates. One of the newest terms to hit the world of internet marketing is tagging, and it is important for web site owners to understand what tags are and how they can help in reaching customers and driving traffic.
Tags operate in much the same was as keywords, in that tags are used to identify the content contained in a web site link, an image or a blog post. Tags differ from keywords, however, in that they are a browsing tool rather than a searching tool. While an internet user uses a keyword or keyword phrase to search for information, that user will use tags to find and discover that same information.
As the number of social bookmarking sites continues to increase, the importance of tags will increase along with it. There is already a great deal of traffic generated by tags, and that traffic potential is likely to increase.
The reasons for the popularity of tags is easy to understand. Many experienced web users have grown tired of searching for information, and they can instead use the many new social bookmarking sites to find information that others have already searched for and found to be worthy. These social bookmarking sites also help to weed out much of the junk that is found by search engine spiders. This bookmarking uses the power of its members to find and tag those sites that are most relevant and most useful, and for that reason they represent an important leap forward in internet technology, and a powerful opportunity for savvy web marketers.
