Customer Service Considerations for Sellers of Audio Books

When it comes to selling on the internet, or anywhere else for that matter, perhaps no consideration is as important as that of customer service. Everyone who shops, whether online or off, has at one time or another come face to face with poor customer service, and bad customer service experiences may be responsible for more business failures than virtually any other factor. When setting up a web site to sell audio books, it is essential to consider customer service from the thought, and not to merely tack it on as an afterthought.

One of the most critical customer service factors for the owner of an audio book selling web site is responsiveness to the inquiries of customers and potential customers alike. Every question, no matter how small or seemingly inconsequential, should be answered in a timely manner. If any immediate answer is not possible, the customer should at least receive an automated acknowledgement that his or her question has been received and is being researched.

Of course customer service becomes even more important when it is time for customers to actually make a purchase, and it is essential that the web site owner have a strong and user friendly order acknowledgement and tracking process in place. In the event of audio books delivered through the mail on tapes and CDs it is important that customers be able to easily track their purchases from the warehouse to their doors. Many web site owners integrate UPS, USPS or FedEx tracking into their sites, providing a user friendly and cost effective solution to tracking customer orders.

Of course these days not all customers will want to purchase audio books on tapes and CDs. When audio books first hit the market more than two decades ago, virtually all of them came only on cassette tapes, but as CDs became the format of choice audio books followed suit, and books on tape soon became books on CD. These days, audio books in downloadable formats like MP3 are one of the fastest growing trends in the market, and it is essential that the seller of audio books provide a safe, secure and easy way for buyers to download MP3 files of the audio books they want. These MP3 files can then be downloaded to a favorite listening device and taken virtually anywhere, without the hassle or bulk of a walkman or portable CD player.

It is important for the owner of the audio book web site to include clear and detailed instructions for downloading and using these on demand audio books. When preparing those instructions it is important for web site owners to keep in mind the fact that not all customers will be tech savvy, so it is important to provide step by step instructions that will work for every user.

It is also important for every seller of audio books to remember that the speed at which their customers connect to the internet will vary as well, and it is important for their downloading technology to take that fact into account. While broadband connections like DSL and cable are becoming more and more commonplace, a significant proportion of internet users still connect to the internet over slower dial up connections. If is important for the seller of audio books to use technology which can download those large MP3 files in a reasonable period of time, even over a slow dial up connection.

Selling audio books on the internet can be a very lucrative business for those with the right sales and customer service skills. The key is to always keep the needs of customers in mind, and to constantly strive to deliver more than the customer is expecting.
