Tagging and the Power of Digg
There are many great social networking and social bookmarking web sites out there, and tagging links, web sites, images and blog posts is a great way to drive targeted traffic to your web site and those of your affiliates, all without having to rely on the monopoly of the major search engines.
There are a number of specialized social networking web sites, including web sites focused on news, financial information and entertainment. It is a good idea for internet marketers to thoroughly research this specialized world in order to know where to focus their limited time and resources.
One of the most exciting of the social web sites is known as Digg. The Digg web site allows its members to submit links to a story. These links are then reviewed by other members, with the most popular stories receiving placement on either the home page of the site or other public pages.
Membership is Digg is free, and only members are permitted to submit stories. After signing up, members simply submit the url where the story is located. The story can be a web article or a blog post. Since Digg focuses on technology it is important to submit stories that in some way relate to the world of technology.
The stories that are submitted remain in the queue until they have been reviewed and found worthy of being placed on the pages of the site. Stories are deemed worthy after they have received the required number of votes. The cool thing is that Digg members are able to see the recently submitted stories even before they are placed on the public pages for viewing by non-members. Digg members are also able to vote for the stories in the queue. If the story receives enough votes within a certain period of time they are placed on the public pages. The more votes the story receives the greater the likelihood that it will end up on the front page.
It takes very little imagination to understand how a site like Digg can help a smart web marketer gain exposure and drive targeted traffic. The power of social networking sites has been growing by leaps and bounds, and sites like Digg rely on the power of their members to provide great content and excellent information.
For this reason it is important to understand the guidelines before joining and submitting stories to Digg. It is important, for instance, to submit stories or blog posts only once, and to avoid posting off topic articles. It is important, of course, to read the terms of service carefully before making your first post, and to ask any questions you may have before posting. Keeping your articles relevant, on topic and useful is the best way to gain credibility, and traffic, for your enterprise.
