Tagging Basics – What is a Tag?

Every web site owner who wants to take advantage of the awesome power of social bookmarking web sites will need to be familiar with the concept of the tag. Tagging is at the heart of the social bookmark revolution, and an understanding of tagging is vital to success in this new technology. Tags provide users of social bookmarking sites with a way to categorize their blog posts, web sites and images. Anyone who is familiar with the keyword concept will understand how tags work. Users will tag an image, post or web site with a keyword or a key phrase, and this helps to organize things. All other posts, web sites and images with the same keyword or key phrase will be organized together, making them easier to find.

In essence, tags function the same way as keywords, and they serve the same purpose. For instance, someone searching a social bookmarking site for information about resumes would find all the web sites, posts and images relating to resumes all grouped together, making them much easier to use and much more user friendly.

Every web site owner who uses internet marketing knows how important keywords are, so tagging should not be a difficult concept to grasp. One key difference is that tags create more of a browsing tool, as opposed to the search tool that search engines utilize. It is important to keep this in mind in order to get the most benefit from tagging.

There are a great many excellent social bookmarking sites, and it is important to do plenty of research into which ones are the best and which ones are the up and comers. The nature of the internet is one of constant change, and it is important for all web based marketers to keep on top of the latest trends in order to fully utilize the power of the internet. Tagging is one of the most important concepts for internet marketers to grasp, and it is one of the most powerful tools in the internet marketing toolbox.
