Summer Sales Meltdown – Don’t Get Stuck!
I hope you had a great 4th of July holiday. I apologize for not sending out an issue last week, but like most of you I was relaxing on the beach watching fireworks and enjoying the weather!
In Last Week’s Issue I talked to you about Google’s new backdoor to get your site listed quickly (sometimes overnight).
This week I want to talk to you about something very important. I write about this every summer, so all of you long time readers will have heard this several times…but it’s very important and very time sensitive.
Every summer (at least for as long as I’ve been marketing online – since 1996) something very strange occurs….
It happens quickly (sometimes overnight) and it’s devastating to your business…
It’s the dreaded SUMMER SALES MELTDOWN…..
It happens every year…you can set your watch by it. The sun comes out…people slowly creep outside to the beach (where there are NO computers) and they stop buying stuff online.
It’s a disaster for online marketers like you and me!
The first couple of years I didn’t know what to make of it…I really freaked out….then I came to terms with it. If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em – I would say to myself, and then shoot off to the beach for a month or two of relaxation (and a drop in income that would keep most people up at night with fright).
Of course, I bore easily…and a couple of months of sitting around on the beach (while it sounds good at first) bores the crap out of me…so I started thinking about the summer sales meltdown problem.
I came up with a bunch of solutions, and started testing them. Over the years I’ve honed it down to a fine art and these days, not only do I never have a Summer Sales Meltdown, my summer sales actually increase!
So what’s the secret? How do you stop the dreaded Summer Sales Meltdown? Easy….
You have a Summer Sale!
Now this is important…you don’t just have any old sale…you have to do it right. First, you write a letter. This letter is the same letter every stinking year…I pull it out, dust it off, and email it to my list of potential customers (email addresses of people that I’ve been collecting for the last few months from my various web sites) and to my past customers.
You can copy this letter if you want, with my compliments (don’t copy it EXACTLY, modify it to suit your product needs).
Here goes:
Hello |name|, This is John Skorczewski…
I’ve gotten myself into a bit of a problem and I wondered if you could help.
It happens every year….
Summer begins, the sun starts to shine, and people start to turn off their computers and enjoy the weather outside (the nerve of some people!)….
…And our sales drop to a trickle. It happens across the board every summer. People are out enjoying the summer and not surfing the web and buying our stuff.
Usually I just grin and bear it, and then shut off my computer and head to the beach myself. If you can’t beat em, join em!
But this year I sat down and started brainstormin ways to prop up our slumping summer sales.
And this is what I’ve come up with.
I hope you decided not to purchase the PRODUCT NAME because of the high price tag. That’s generally the reason people give us when they decide not to buy the PRODUCT NAME.
If that’s the case, I’d like to offer you a huge discount on the PRODUCT NAME. This deal is only good for the next couple of days, by which time I hope to have propped up our sales enough to stop worrying and hit the beach myself. ……..etc etc etc.
That letter pulls em in like crazy. You can easily write something similar. The point is, you need to be aggressive with your marketing during the summer sales slump if you want to save yourself FROM the summer sales slump.
And then once orders start pouring in….THAT’S when you head to the beach 🙂
That’s all for this week. See you next Monday!
