‘ThinkHost’ Powered by 100% Renewable Energy
‘ThinkHost’ is a company powered by 100% renewable energy – a solar and wind mix. The company overcame the economical and infrastructural problems with ‘green energy certificates’. Those who purchase green energy certificates can choose either wind, biomass, landfill gas or solar energy, according to Michael Bloch.

The company overcame the economical and infrastructural problems with ‘green energy certificates’.

Becoming 100% renewable energy powered
The following were the problems faced by ThinkHost:
“Due to our infrastructure and geographical distribution, we couldn’t install solar panels or construct a few wind turbines outside. It’s also incredibly expensive. So, what to do? We weren’t going to give up in our goals of becoming a very “green” web hosting service and we also didn’t want to pass on extra costs associated with going greener to our clients!”
Green Energy Certificates
Thankfully, green energy certificates helped to make our goals achievable. Through an extensive audit, we calculated the electricity usage of our servers and staff offices, then purchased the necessary green energy tags. There are a number of nationally accredited alternative energy providers around that provide certificates. They are the experts at generating green power; our specialty is web hosting. By not having to concern ourselves with the actual generation of renewable energy, it allows us focus more on our hosting technology and client care”.
Michael Bloch on ThinkHost
Michael Bloch says, “Global warming and a plethora of other environmental threats facing our planet are being taken very seriously by many – including some web hosting companies; and it appears to be paying off.
But does the average online shopper really care about the environmental issues?
Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of environmental issues and they will make the message loud and clear with their dollars. They will gravitate towards companies that can see past the next financial year – way past, to generations yet to come who must live on the planet that we leave them. This is not just a tree-hugging, bleeding heart philosophy as some cynics may think, it is simply good business.
ThinkHost, Inc. (http://www.thinkhost.com), a progressive principles based web hosting company established in 1999, switched their hosting operations to 100% renewable energy late last year; powered through a wind/solar mix”.
Vladislav Davidzon on Environmental Commitment
Vladislav Davidzon, Executive Director of ThinkHost explains – “We’ve had a very serious environmental/progressive business commitment since we began. We sponsor a number of environmental groups and have had a very successful donation program in place since early 2004. Our switch to renewable energy is an important extension of our efforts – and the feedback has been amazing.
The big bonus for all of our clients is that they can market their sites as being green-powered and be happy in the knowledge that by hosting with us, they are increasing their contribution towards positive social change – at no extra cost to them.
Companies can become really secretive about their operations and miserly in what they give back to the community that they profit from. To us, it’s not just about the bottom line. We want to be different, to demonstrate to others how to achieve what we have through the implementation of progressive business principles and also by supporting other groups and companies who apply them. It’s become quite clear that not only business, but our society and planet in general are threatened by current slash and burn practices. We’re all in this together and only together can we overcome these challenges.
It’s been really positive – we offer our affiliate partners free earth-friendly hosting coupons at no cost which they can then add to their products and services to increase their value. Hosting is pretty much hosting these days to many people, but when the green angle is thrown in, it really sparks interest from partners’current and potential customers, helping them to increase conversions on their own products.
