How merchants find their affiliates (and how to profit from this knowledge)

The number one goal of any affiliate is to profit from a relationship with internet merchants, and one of the best ways to start is to understand how merchants use affiliates and partnership links to drive traffic to their sites.

Driving traffic to their web site is the number one way for merchants to drive money into their wallets, and there is no doubt that the most valuable traffic to any web merchant is the traffic that is provided by other people. This is where the affiliate link, and your business comes into play.

The affiliate/merchant relationship should be a win/win situation for both parties. After all, the merchant gets extra traffic, extra sales and higher search engine rankings through affliliate links, and the affiliate in turn receives handsome commission checks through the sales his or her affiliate link generates.

There is simply no question that the number one best traffic to any merchant web site is the web site traffic that other people send there. After all getting affiliates and partners to send their best customers and most valued subscribers to the merchant is the very best way to generate traffic. It is free, it is effortless, and best of all it is targeted marketing.

Therefore, the goal of these web based merchants is to find the affiliates and partners that will get them the best business, and it is important that they find YOU when they search for the best affiliates.

The number one place merchants look for affiliates and partners is Google.com. Google is the number one free resource on the market, both for internet merchants and general web users. There are many ways that web based merchants use Google to search for potential partners. They include:

– Searches for popular products. Web based merchants will search for a competitor’s product and check to see which sites are promoting that product. The affiliates promoting competing products can be good candidates to promote their products.

– Web merchants also search for articles related to their products. They will identify the web sites that are hosting those articles, and inquire whether the sites are wiling to host their articles as well.

– Web based merchants will also use Google to search for accessories or items that are related to the products they sell. They will then seek out those affiliates to promote their products.
Google adwords are another popular way merchants find affiliates. In most cases, the users of these adwords are the most experienced marketers, and they may be open to joint venture projects.

– Conducting Google searches for the names of well known experts in their field is another way merchants connect with potential affiliates.

– Internet merchants will also search for a series of words or phrases relating to tips or articles which relate to their product or service. For instance, a seller of pet products may search for “pet product articles” or “pet product tips”, whereas a seller of wine accessories may look for “wine accessory articles”.

As you can see, all those internet merchants are looking as hard for you as you are for them. It is virtually impossible for any web based merchant to succeed without a solid network of joint venture projects and affiliate marketers. The key is to structure your business to make sure that you are the affiliate the best merchants find.
