VOIP wiretapping could create problems, according to a report by the Information Technology Association of America. VOIP wiretapping would either require re-engineering of the internet or introduce broad security risks.
The US Federal Communications Commission has passed a rule requiring all VOIP providers to allow wiretapping by May 2007.
According to the report, the requirements will stall internet innovations in the US. The requirement would add a lot of money in set-up and maintenance costs for VOIP providers and to other applications providing voice services, including instant messaging and online games.
