FaceTime Communications has warned of a worm called yhoo32.explr that affects Yahoo Messenger. The worm installs a ‘Safety Browser’ that hijacks Internet Explorer homepage.

The malware installs its own web browser on a user’s computer without permission. The Safety Browser uses the Internet Explorer icon. Users can mistake it for Internet Explorer.

The worm then spreads the infection to Yahoo Messenger contacts on the user’s computer. The worm sends a malicious link to a website when a user is chatting on Yahoo Messenger.

The malicious link leads to a website which loads a command file onto the receiver’s PC and installs the Safety Browser.

According to FaceTime, such spam through instant messaging is called ‘spim’.
