The rate of spam in Irish emails is increasing, according to a survey by IE Internet. The rate of spam was 40.48% in January, compared to 38.93% in Dec 2005.
39.4% of the total spam were sent from the US. South Korea and China each sent more than 5% of the spam emails coming into Ireland.
Ken O’Driscoll, technical manager with IE Internet, said: “The 40.48pc spam figure is worrying because far from seeing the expected decrease after December, it’s actually increased by two whole points. If that trend continues, the rate of spam affecting Irish businesses could reach close to 50pc before the end of the year.” [Source]
The rate of virus infection in Irish emails in January 2006 was 14.15%, down from 23.43% in Dec 2005. A single virus Mytob.DY accounted for 25.93% of total virus attacks in January 2006.
O’Driscoll said: “It dropped from an annual high of 17pc in November 2005 to around 7pc in December so there was an indication that it might be die out.” [Source]
The second most popular virus was W32/Netsky.P, which was responsible for 15.13% of all infections in January.
