The FTC is going to issue a report on the CAN-SPAM Act’s effectiveness to the congress.

The title of the report is “˜Effectiveness and Enforcement of the CAN-SPAM Act’. Officials from the state and federal enforcement agencies, along with the Canadian Competition Bureau, will also announce criminal law enforcement initiatives that will prevent illegal spam operations.

Andrew Lochart, senior director of marketing, Postini Inc, said, “There isn’t a lot of good news to report. The percentage of e-mail that’s spam, phishing, viruses, or a directory-harvesting attack continues to go up.” [Source]

The CAN-SPAM Act of 2003 establishes basic requirements of users who send commercial email. The Act also lists penalties for spammers and those companies who advertise their products using spam.
