The U.S Senate Committee on Commerce has approved the U.S SAFE WEB Act by unanimous consent. The legislation will now be forwarded to the full Senate.


The U.S Senate Committee on Commerce has approved the U.S SAFE WEB Act of 2005 by unanimous consent. The legislation will “address the challenges posed by globalization of fraudulent, deceptive and unfair practices”. [Source]

The US SAFE WEB Act will provide the FTC with tools in four main areas:

a. Improving international cooperation in investigations and cases.
b. Improving information gathering capabilities.
c. Consumer redress.
d. Strengthening enforcement relationships.

According to the FTC, there are five faces of cross-border complaints:

a. Spam
b. Spyware
c. Information Security
d. Cross-border telemarketing and
e. Health and Weight-loss advertising

The bill now awaits the cooperation of the full Senate.
