As you probably know, today is the day that Americans celebrate our freedom. On July 4, 1776, we declared ourselves free from British rule.

In small towns across America, there will be parades, concerts and civic unity. It’s also going to be a great day of picnics, baseball, fireworks and fun as well.

For example, we have our grandchildren visiting us, and they have helped Grandmother make a cake shaped and decorated like an American flag. Along with hot dogs and potato chips we have our lunch ready to go in an hour.

The Google doodle at http://www.google.com is especially ambitious and appropriate today. Be sure to take a look.

Independence means a lot of things. FDR spoke of four freedoms:
1. Freedom of Speech
2. Freedom of Worship
3. Freedom from Want
4. Freedom from Fear

There are other freedoms Americans hold dear, but these are surely close to our hearts.

But surely, if these freedoms are to be more than theoretical, it requires that we take action to create them afresh daily. For ourselves, for our families and for our neighbors. Do nothing to suppress them; do what you can to advance them.

Self-reliance makes freedom easier to attain and maintain. Being dependent of government limits our freedom, and whenever possible should be avoided.

Responsible citizens who have the gumption to work for a living to support themselves and share as they are able are foundational for an ongoing thriving democracy.

Entrepreneurs are an embodiment of the American Dream, builders who see in their labor the possibility of better days tomorrow.
